• Check to see if the toy is on any recall lists – It is very important for you to make sure that the toy you are getting isn’t on any recall list.  You can check this by looking on the internet on such sites as the Consumer Product Safety Commissions and Recalls government website.  They generally have a great detailed, up to date list.
• Check to see that the toy is non toxic – When buying such toys as art supplies, crayons or toys that contain fluid, you want to be sure that the ingredients are non toxic.  This information should be supplied right on the label.
• Learn to read and follow warning labels – It is very important that you not only read the warning labels, but also follow warning labels on your child’s toys to the letter.  Many small toys or toys that have small parts will have a warning label that states not suitable for children under 3 years of age.  You will also find a warning on all electronic toys as well.
• Look for cords or strings that may be attached to the toy – if you are buying a toy that has a string or a cord on it, you want to be sure that it is not too long.  You also want to check and see if there are any loops in the string that is attached, as this can pose a threat of strangulation for a child.
• Try to stay away from toys that have small parts – if you have a child that is three years of age or younger, it is very important to try to steer clear of toys have loose or small parts.  These small parts can be easy for your child to swallow.  Also look into things such as the eyes on a toy as well as the nose as these can easily be pulled off by a little one.
• Beware of toys that have pointed or sharp edges – all it takes is one time for a child to trip while holding a toy that has a sharp or pointy side to it, to get a serious injury.

Our children are our most prized accomplishments so it is only natural for us to want to keep them as safe as possible.  That is why it is important for us to make sure that they are playing with toys that are age appropriate and as safe as they can be.
